A Random Encounter

This was before the pandemic. I was at the grocery store where this individual allowed me to go ahead while they queued behind me. At the time,  I had less than time items to buy. As the cashier rang my items, I went on the other side to bag my groceries.  I kept eye contact with the cashier to know when she was done. From the angle I was,  I could not tell if the cashier was done with my items because they continued to scan items.

Upon returning to the other side to pay, the cashier was still ringing more groceries. This was not mine. I informed the cashier that those other groceries rang,  were not mine. In that moment, the cashier stated your groceries are paid for by the individual behind you. I turned, and we made eye contact with the individual. They smiled, and I smiled back. I moved closer to them to show my gratitude. The individual response was I needed to do an act of kindness because others, including strangers, have done it to me.

This kind gesture was a reminder that you never know who is behind you.

This is a reminder that good people still exist and kindness can be in whatever form.
